54 Probation
54.1 This clause applies to Continuing and Fixed-Term Academic and Professional Employees. It does not apply to Casual Employees.
54.2 An employee’s probation Probation will be managed in accordance with relevant University policy. Probation entails setting and clarifying work performance expectations for employees new to a position as well as ensuring opportunities for support are provided in order that appropriate expectations can be met.
54.3 The length of the probationary Probationary period will be for a minimum of two (2) weeks or as otherwise prescribed below (whichever is greater):
Type of Appointment: Probation Period
Academic employees Employees Fixed-term: Maximum Six (6) months where the contract is for one (1) year or more. Pro-rata where the contract is for less than one (1) year
Academic employees Employees Continuing (Levels A – D): Three (3) years (possibility to extend in accordance with policy)
Academic employees Employees Continuing Level E: Maximum By Agreement agreement (up to three [3] years)
Research (Contingent Funded) Employment: Where this is a second or subsequent contract in the same position no probation period will be applicable
Professional employees Employees Fixed-term: Maximum Three (3)6 months where the contract is for one (1) year or more. Pro-rata where the contract is for less than one (1) year. Possibility to extend in exceptional circumstances to a maximum of six (6) months
Professional employees Continuing: HEW Levels 1 to 7 – three (3) months with the possibility to extend in exceptional circumstances to six (6) months. HEW Levels 8 to 9 – six (6) months
54.4 For all employees other than Continuing Academic employees, where the employment is not confirmed during probation, employees will be entitled to two (2) weeks’ notice or payment in lieu.

54.3 Where a Professional Employee is subject to a Probationary period and, following completion of not less than 3 months of that period, the employee’s performance is assessed as meeting the required standard, the University may confirm the employee’s appointment prior to the expiry of the Probationary period.
54.4 For all employees other than Continuing Academic employees, where the employment is not confirmed during probation, employees will be entitled to two (2) weeks’ notice or payment in lieu.
54.5 Where a Research (Contingent Funded) Employee is appointed on a second or subsequent contract in the same position, and has completed an initial probation period, no additional probation period will be applicable.
