Morgan Love
Our UQ branch secretary, and Project Officer in ITS.
What’s your name and your official role in the NTEU?
My name is Morgan Love, and I am the UQ branch secretary.
How did you get that role – is it a paid role? Is it elected, or did you apply for it as a job?
When our last branch secretary vacated the role, I nominated for it and was then the branch committee voted for me to take it on. I’m going to nominate for the role again next year. It’s a voluntary position.
What does it involve, day-to-day?
Day to day I help manage the UQ Branch meetings, Teams channels, document libraries, and whatever else comes along. I assist the branch president and vice presidents where I can, and generally just try do the organisational tasks that branch committee members struggle to find time for.
How and why did you get involved in the NTEU?
I joined the NTEU on the day I started at UQ, I’ve done that every place I have worked.
I got more involved after meeting our UQ NTEU organiser Kate, she helped me work out how I could contribute and connected me to people and causes.
What’s the worst thing you’ve ever had to deal with through the NTEU?
As a support person, I’ve had to help members deal with overzealous and uncaring managers wielding their power. Managers taking little things and blowing them out of proportion, needing to be reminded of workers’ rights.
If you could change one thing at UQ/Higher Ed sector, what would it be?
I want to see more transparency, and more accountability.
What are you most proud of that our Union has achieved?
Our last Enterprise Agreement (in 2023) was a big win. Despite difficult negotiations with UQ managers the bargaining team fought and fought and we got a pretty good deal.
